The Oberth and the Bird by thefirstfleet The Oberth and the Bird by thefirstfleet
After a really-really long time, I finally decided to refurbish my Oberh class model. Not too much, better textures, a few modification to the model itself, an overall better result, I think. Of course, she's getting effed up by the Klingon BoP, as usual :D

I came up with a slightly bigger, more heavily armed version of this class, named in honor of the late Stephen Hawking -- USS Hawking NCC-31418

Poor, doomed Oberth.  Minimal shields, minimal phasers, no photon torpepdoes.

I am SO glad my Nova class has some teeth!

Oberth class vessels did have one torpedo tube in Star Trek Starfleet Academy, though not a lot of torpedoes (about 20 I think).

Okudas be damned!   According to the blueprints in my closet drawer the Grissom was a Glenn class scout/survey/science vessel.  Named after the first astronauts.
You can be faulted if you're young and have the wrong materials.

Well, it's called Oberth in the on-screen ref material.

Well, to be fair, that's what everybody remembers the Oberth for. It along with the Miranda class did sort of become the cannon fodder of the Trek universe it seems like. :P

Captain: Alright, full port thrusters and push us to the side..... MARK!

Torpedo: *Misses*

Helm: They're coming around again. Passing now, starboard!

Captain: Ready phasers, two shots to their impulse manifold!

Bird of prey: *Passes over Oberth, ready for another pass*

Captain: Now...!

Oberth: *Fires phasers*

Bird of prey: *Disabled!*

Klingon captain: I knew today would be terrible, but defeated by one of THOSE?!

Klingon crew: *Laughs at him*

An unarmed science ship. Kruge was right to blast his gunner away! Where's the honor in this?

There is one thing I came to understand. Klingon honor is the same national legend like American liberty, British gentlementship or Russian military bravery. It's good for propaganda, even better as a face to show the outside world, but really few actually live by it.

I say we petition CBS to rename the Bird of Prey to "Oberth-killers".

Poor little Obeth, a good reflection on the design, but I do still wonder how they get between the two hulls without using a transporter?

Bernd Schneider says the turbolift capsule goes through a tube that follows the curvature of the pylons. With artificial gravity, you won't feel the tilt.

I know but the Pylons aren't actually wide enough to actually fit a Turbolift, when you scale them to the window.

I never thought adorable would be a term to be applied to a Starship, but the Oberth class is such a nice little ship. Thank you for making these wonderful pictures.

I always liked the Oberth. She's such a tiny and interesting ship, one of the most recognizable hull profiles ever.

I think you should do a reverse of this one day. Perhaps with the Oberth emmiting an energy pulse at a Bop to break its cloak and perhaps firing a Phaser at it at the same time.

In my opinion, his main fault was to use a torpedo.
Torpedoes are, as we all know, built to blast holes into the hull of a ship - at least.

Great rendering.  I like the ship class but a bit outclassed by other vessels.  If I remember correctly she was purely a science vessel but it would be nice to she a combat model.  Although the Federation did not believe in warship until the Defiant.

Sadly, not all captains/crews know how to use their ship's assets to their advantage.
