I always thought I'd die before I see our home system again. Sol isn't the place for me. Not the place that welcomes back the pariah I'd become. I guess when you criticize the Federation on the day of its creation, you sort of wind up as a persona non grata on its capital world.
But we made it back. Not because we wanted to, but because we had no other choice. At least this is what I keep telling myself as I look outside the porthole of my office. Alice looks at me, I know she can read my mind.
"You have to warn them", she says silently. I look at her and sigh.
"They know already. It was all over the comm network."
Officially, the Federation is not in a state of war with the Kzinti. From what I know, only Earth is readying its forces. Not Starfleet, the higher-ups won't let them. The Vulcans and the other xenos have no beef with these cat things. But we've already lost eight ships. Human ships. As far as I know, Polaris was the first to live and tell the tale. Our journey back to Sol wasn't an easy one. I kind of understand now how Archer felt when he took his ship out to the Delphic Expanse. Xindi, Kzinti... they even sound alike. But these cats, they're worse than even the most vicious Reptilian... or Romulan, for that matter. If even the half of what they say is true, Humans have found themselves on the sad end of the food chain. And without Starfleet to back us up, we'll be alone. The First Fleet, against the tigers of the night...
