TIMELINE OF THE POLARISVERSE

Points to be considered

"Starship Polaris" takes place in the mainstream Star Trek universe. It features one main line and not the "pocket universe" incorporating the ENT era. I say "pocket universe" because I see ENT that way, being created by Picard's time jump in "First Contact". As "canon" for the past, I accept Masao Okazaki's timeline and starship designs.
In the following timeline, I reckon with the "sliding timeline" used by Trek, that is, modifying dates and events to fit real-world historical occurrenses. Star Trek is fiction, thus creating a fictional historical background different from ours is completely acceptable by me. I try not to contradict elements from the Trek history by creating the "past" of the Polaris-Trekverse. I might make deliberate errors to correct some canonical, though ambigous elements. Also, I attempt to create a history that can explain events such as World War III and the Eugenics Wars, as well as the rapid space exploration of the late 20th century, as said in TOS.

Time, the final frontier…

1942: Nazi Germany launches the V2 missile, reaching the boundary of space.

1943: The War Cabinet of the United Kingdom replaces Sir Winston Churchill with Sir Stafford Cripps as Prime Minister. Cripps manages to win the support of the Isles as well as the Colonies, and sets the cornerstones of a new democratic socialist ideology, later named "Crippsian Progressivism". In the United States of America, the Philadelphia Experiment takes place, using an experimental cloaking device found in a rare Slaver Stasis Box in the early 1920s. The experiment ends in the loss of several lives and is abandoned for some time, only to be re-opened as part of the Montauk Project.

1945: World War II ends, leaving Europe in ruins. The United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics remain the only superpowers.

1946: The UK adapts a centralized system of planned economy and other social measures, tilting heavily toward the Soviet Union, accepted and aided by the large working class. Land is confiscated from the aristocrats and large collective farms are formed on them, allowing a moderate but not austere standard of living. The Cold War begins.

1950: A Gorn starship crash-lands in the Mid-Western United States. The crew are responsible for the cattle mutilations of the upcoming decades.

1952: Sir Stafford Cripps dies with the legacy of making the now de-colonized United Kingdom an ally of the Soviet Union.

1953: Death of Joseph Stalin. Two years later, the reformer Nikita Khrushschev seizes power in the USSR.

1955: The Vietnam War starts.

1957: The USSR launches Sputnik 1, Earth's first artificial satellite. Sputnik 2 is launched, sending the dog Laika to Earth's orbit. A Vulcan cruiser observes the flights and reports results back to Vulcan. V'Shar, the Vulcan Secret Service deems Humankind as a future threat and launches a crash program to elliminate the would-be menace. Unbeknowst to the Vulcan Government, they incite several Cold War incidents hoping that a new global war will result in the mutually assured destruction of Cold War powers. Obscure reports also indicate V'Shar's responsibility in the spreading of new virulent epidemics.

1958-61: The USA and the USSR conduct unmanned and secret manned spaceflights. All manned flights end in disaster and are smothered up by the authorities.

1961: First succesful human spaceflight, conducted by the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.

1965: The USA begins its Human Augmentation Project, located in a secret laboratory in Haiti. The Soviet Union learns about this through espionage and starts its own project in Poland.

1968: India and China also begin their Augment projects.

1969: First succesful Moon landing, conducted by the American astronaut Neill Armstrong.

1970: The first Augments are born, among them is Khan Noonien Singh.

1975: Saigon is held by the American and South Vietnamese forces. Although almost a pyrrhic one, the Vietnam War ends with an American victory.

1986: The Chernobyl Disaster shakes the Soviet Union, urging premier Mikhail Gorbachev to speed up his reforms. Transparent Aluminum is invented in the USA. Metlesits Dávid László, ancestor of David Metlesits is born in Budapest, Hungary.

1987-90: Gorbachev and his aides plan the re-structuring of the USSR, based upon Crippsian Progressivism. Driven not by pride of his predecessors but by the humility of a nation on the verge of collapse, he asks for British aid. This leads to the coinage of the term "Only Gorbachev could go to England", mirroring the "Nixon in China" phrase. Other Eastern Block countries follow the Soviet example in the upcoming decade.

1991: The Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics is created, allowing free enterprise and a multi-party system. The Progressive Party wins the general elections with a landslide majority. Sergei Kiriyenko succeeds Gorbachev as the leader of the reconstructed USSR.

1992: The government of the USA allows the deployment of the Augments to topple the re-emerging USSR. They are stopped by an ambitious independent Augment leader of Indian origin: Khan Noonien Singh.

1992-1996: The Eugenics Wars. Independent Augments turn against those in service of Human governents but later they join forces for world conquest. In a bloody war that sparks Human nationalism and xenophobia, the Augments are defeated. Khan and his followers escape on a prototype spaceship, the SS Botany Bay.

1995: German Re-Unification under Augment rule. Historians agree on the sinisterly comical fact that Germany was recreated by the Übermenschen.

1996: The space probe Voyager 6 is launched. The European Union is formed of United Germany, France, Austria, Italy, the Benelux States and Spain.

1998: Construction begins on Goddard Moonbase, the token of Human co-operation.

1999: The space probe NOMAD is launched.

2000: The ion propulsion drive is invented by a pan-Eastern-block science team.

2008: Fusion power is invented by US scientists.

2012: The Soviet ion propulsion ship "Korolyov" reaches Mars in two and a half months. The first man to land on another planet is Colonel Vadim Maksimovich Tikhonov. Stepping upon the alien soil, he says: "This is for all Mankind".

2018: The first manned Saturn mission is led by veteran astronaut Shaun Geoffrey Christopher.

2020: The United States and Canada merge after decades of strenghtening cordial relationship. The United States of Northern America is formed.

2020: The USSR and the USNA leave the United Nations, claiming that it has become nothing more than the playground for third-world "midget states".

2025: The UK grants Northern Ireland independence after long-running violence and terrorism and the threat of civil war. Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland merge, forming the state United Ireland.

2033: Puerto Rico is admitted as a member state of the USNA.

2052: The United Nations Organization is dissolved after decades of bitter international political conflicts.

2053: World War III breaks out, between the Western Alliance (USNA, ANZAC countries NATO countries and the Eastern Coalition (USSR, UK, China and Warshaw Pact countries).

2053-2060: World War III rages on the whole of Earth and some of her colonies throughout the Solar System. Nuclear bombardments are everyday occurrences and most major cities, including Washington, D.C. and Moscow are severely damaged. Drugged soldiers march and die in thousands. Romania defects to the Western Alliance and is reduced to a rump state by the USSR, partially occupied by the USSR and Hungary. Governments and judicial systems collapse throughout Earth. The War ends with status quo ante bellum, for no-one remains to claim victory over the other.

2060-73: The Post-Atomic Horror. More than half of Earth sinks into warlordism and anarchy. Harmful mutations and radiation sickness kill more than the War did. Former ECON countries suffer more than Western Alliance countries.

2261: Hungary, being relatively spared in the War and thus the strongest country in the region, opens negotiations with former Warshaw Pact countries. Led by Hungary and based upon an old Polish concept, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia form the loose federation of Intermarium (Tengerköz or Międzymorze) to restore Eastern Europe to its former glory.

2063: Zefram Cochrane's historical Warp flight. First contact with the Vulcans.

2064: The United States of Northern America is restored with Vulcan aid. San Francisco is the new capital.

2065: The United Kingdom is dissolved. England ratifies a new Constitution. The Republic of England is formed.

2067: The USNA begins to contact surviving and restored governments throughout Earth to unify the planet into a superstate. The term "United Earth" is used for the first time.

2070: The global information system is largely restored throughout Earth. New York is re-built following the almost complete devastation it recieved in World War III.

2073: The European Hegemony is formed, encompassing the former European Union of Western Europe and Intermarium of Eastern Europe. The remnant state of the USSR loses its satellites forever.

2080: The USSR is restored after a bitter civil war. The new capital is Leningrad.

2087: The first contact with the Tellarites almost turns disastrous as the aliens arrive to conquer Earth, but are stopped by a joint Soviet-American space navy, led by the Warp ship Polyarnaya Zvezda. After this incident, the USSR and the USNA start to co-operate. End of the Cold War.

2103: The colonization of Mars begins. Dome cities are constructed and inhabited by non-conformists who  are entirely disillusioned with Humankind. The first attempts at terraforming also begin this year.

2103: The Gundersdottir's Dome Rebellion starts the Martian War of Independence. After major strikes that almost cripple the still-frail economy of post-war Earth, the masters of the colonies grant independence to Mars in the Fundamental Declarations of the Martian Colonies.

Around 2110: Earth finally overcomes the effects of World War III. The New United Nations is formed, with a common space force, the Solar Fleet.

2112: After more than half a century of lying in ruins, the re-construction of Moscow is finished. The capital of the USSR remains Leningrad.

2125: The last of the historical Caitian-Kzin Wars ends with Caitian victory, due to the Caitians acquiring Warp technology.

2130: The United Earth is formed after the last few countries join the alliance. The first few decades is characterized by the dominance of the Progressive Party, of Anglo-Russian origin. Section 31 is formed by the combination of several old secret services. The Solar Fleet is re-organized into the United Earth Stellar Navy. The United Earth Space Probe Agency is formed from the various national space agencies.

2132: The International Space Settlement Act is ratified. Hundreds of UE starships leave the Sol system in the upcoming decades to colonize uninhabited worlds throughout the quadrant. The Colonial Defence Force is founded to aid and protect the colonists.

2152: Simultaneous UESPA, Colonial Defence and United Earth Stellar Navy reports indicate an expansive, presumably hostile race in the East.

2153: A joint UESPA/UESN mission is seant to the East to investigate the possible threat and find a race originating from twin worlds, never showing themselves. After being detected, the Terran ships are immediately destroyed.

2154: Defence outposts are set up in a haste in the Eastern frontier.

2155: The outbreak of the Earth-Romulan War after the Romulans attack multiple Earth Outposts.

2156: The Battle of Thieurrull. The Romulan fleet massacres the Terran ships.

2157: The Battle of Earth. The Romulans reach Earth and are repelled by a flock of UESN starships ordered to defend the Human homeworld: the UESN First Fleet. One of them is a Powhatan class light cruiser, the UES Polaris, under the command of Captain Linus Randolph. The Battle of Earth turns the tide of the war and Earth ships start to push the Romulans back Eastward.

2158: The Leningrad class tactical dreadnought enters service, each vessel armed with six Chapayev system-to-planet boosted fusion missiles, commonly known as Sunbombs. One such missile is tested on an asteroid, destroying it completely.

2159: The Battle of Vrag'Narod. The UES Voronezh launches a Sunbomb upon the planet, glassing a whole continent. After this incident, the deployment of the Sunbombs are banned.

2160: The Battle of Cheron. The UESN deals a deciesive blow upon the Romulans. Though many in the UESN Command want to visit Romulus with utter devastation, the majority of Admirals and Generals opt for preserving the Romulan dignity to avoid a future war based upon revanchism. Also, the UESN is too weakened to continue the war. The Terran-Rihannsu Non-Agression Treaty is signed.

2161: The United Federation of Planets is formed. Its common navy is Starfleet, based upon the UESN. All member planets are allowed to keep their own small Member Fleets. On Earth, veteran Captains form the United Earth First Fleet, by combining of the remaining old UESN First Fleet and parts of Colonial Defence. One of the early First Fleet ships is the Powhatan class Polaris, now labelled NCC-82. The Colonial Second Fleet is formed by combining the heavily depleted numbers of the old UESN Second, Third and Fourth Fleets originally guarding the main Earth Colonies. The ships continue their old duties of protecting Human colony worlds.

2162: Linus Randolph publishes his infamous work "On the Fall of the Federation and its Consequences". The book is banned the day after its publication, becoming the core of the freshly-appearing anti-Federation samizdat literature.

2163: Elizabethtown, Franzstadt and Csepel, three planets in the Attila system, are colonized by the Hungarian Aerospace Agency, a member of UESPA.

2165: Official Terran first contact with the Kzinti. The Kzinti raid Earth cargo ships moving between the Western border colonies and the core worlds. The First Fleet is sent out to investigate the case and hostilities start first with a few skirmishes, escalating into a full-blown war, known as the First Man-Kzin War.

2168: After the Startide of the Century, a grand burst of solar wind, cripples the defences of the Sol system, the Kzinti almost succeed in invading Earth. The invasion fleet is stopped by a joint Starfleet-First Fleet navy, headed by the veteran starship USS Polaris NCC-82.

2171: The Killkeny Cat Run. After Starfleet strenghtens the First Fleet with advanced starships, the Kzinti are defeated, but many Terran lives are lost in the battles.

2175: The USS Polaris NCC-82 is decommissioned.

2180: In the height of the Eastbound Expansion Programme, the First Fleet makes first contact with the Tholians.

2220: Terran first contact with the Caitians after the Kzinti attack the planet but are repelled by First Fleet aid. The two races form a strong alliance due to their common enmity toward the Kzinti.

2221: Abigail Kelley is born in Holly Pond, USNA.

2223: Tensions between the Federation and the Klingon Empire begin.

2228: Jerome White Eagle is born in Presque Isle, USNA.

2231: Vasily Nussbaum is born in Leningrad, USSR.

2232: Federation first contact with the Tzenkethi, an ancient, boastful but secretive reptilian race. The Tzenkethi declare immediate neutrality, as they did decades earlier when met by their powerful Western neighbors: the mysterious Cardassian Union.

2233: Section 31, under the policy of "the greater good", begins its decades-long project of creating a strong, Kzinti-dominated buffer zone in the West, fearing a possible Cardassian invasion. Their secret, manipulative projects will lead to Humankind's bloodiest wars and, in the end, Section 31's major loss of power.

2234: David Metlesits is born on Elizabethtown Colony.

2235: Ludmila Nussbaum is born in Leningrad, USSR. Rochus Heimann is born in Altena, Germany.

2236: Starfleet engineers sketch up the next generation of capital ships. Reviving the old concept of derivative classes, the design includes all main ship types based upon common, interchangable modules. The design project is plagued by several delays but ends in the birth of such successful classes as the Constitution, Miranda, Pallada and Saladin a decade later.

2237-41: The Second Man-Kzin War. After developing starships that out-class most contemporary Federation starships, the Kzinti launch massive waves of attack, inbound for Chi Draconis. Humankind once again shows their might by not accepting Federation military aid in defeating the Kzinti. The birth of modern Terran Nationalism. The First Fleet destroys the main Kzin fleet at Chi Draconis with suicidal fanatism, forcing the Kzinti to return beyond Federation borders.

2243: Ramón Jésus Jiménez is born in Madrid, Spain.

2245: The starship USS Enterprise is launched under the command of Captain Robert April. Her long and illustrious service will define Federation space navies up to the distant future.

2246: The Pallada class USS Polaris NCC-782 is launched under the command of Captain Maria Boccioni. On her very first mission, the Polaris stops the renegade Kzin scientist Chell. Charlotte Ainsworth is born in London, Republic of England.

2251: Captain Christopher Pike takes over the command of the USS Enterprise. Robert April is promoted to Commodore.

2255: Captain Spencer Culpepper takes over the command of the USS Polaris.

2258: Captain Tomislav Tvrtko takes over the command of the USS Polaris.

2264: Captain James T. Kirk takes over the command of the USS Enterprise. Constitution class starships and derivatives undergo their first refit by replacing accelerator cannons and lasers with photon torpedo launchers (reverse-engineered from Klingon designs) and phasers.

2266: The Third Man-Kzin War starts and almost escalates into the Fourteenth Caitian-Kzin War. The Kzinti launch coordinated, simultaneous attacks against Cait and Western Human colonies. Before Federation authorities figure out that the attack on Cait is actually a fake to lure Starfleet away, the Borderlands are overran by whole Kzinti armadas.

2267: The first confirmed sightings of the Klingon D-8 (K'Tinga) and D-12 (Bird of Prey) starships force Starfleet to amass in the East, leaving only a small contingent to guard Cait and no help for the First Fleet. The Colonial Second Fleet arrives to help the overwhelmed First Fleeters. Numerous ships are destroyed by the new Kzinti battlecruisers, forcing the remaining three operational capital ships, the flagship Rebecca, the Spaun and the Polaris used guerilla tactics to harrass the Kzinti till reinforcements arrived. To get the reinforcements, Captain Tvrtko returned to Earth, leaving the command of the Polaris to his former first officer, David Metlesits. Tvrtko convinces the Andorian Guard, led by Captain Atanatalla sh'Yudrinshira to aid the Terran cause, making the Andorians join the War.

2268: Three nearby Earth colonies of Elizabethtown, Franzstadt and Csepel fall to Kzinti hands without a chance of liberation as organized by Section 31. The Third Man-Kzin War ends, thus, with a Human defeat. Metlesits uncovered the plot behind the loss of the colonies and organized a mass evacuation effort. After the defeat, the remnants of the First Fleet didn't succeed in forcing the authorities to continue the war and liberate the three colonies, with most of the population still not evacuated. With the First Fleet being essentially annihillated in the War, the remaining Terran ships are handed over to Starfleet. Re-classified as a planetary exploration craft, the Polaris is sent out on a new three-year mission and is joined by Ensign Charlotte Ainsworth.

Hmm, interesting, but why do you keep using "east" and "west" for areas in outer space?
