The wasteland starlift by thefirstfleet The wasteland starlift by thefirstfleet
"Captain's log, Stardate 3658.9 - The Enterprise has arrived to the planet Sigma Mu III, th provide supplies for an archeological mission on the surface. After three hours of silence, we have recieved no response to our hails. Lieutenant Uhura achieved a breakthrough by re-modulating our subspace transcievers. The only signal that came through was a garbled cry that cannot be misunderstood. Given the delicate situation at hand, an extended landing party will accompany the standard away team. As the unique magnetic composition of the planet renders the transporter unusable, a flock of shuttles will land planetside. I'll personally lead the mission on the shuttlecraft Galileo, with Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy forming the core of the landing party."

I like the two views of the gull-winged shuttle, which I assume is the Jeffries' shuttle the comments reference. I have not seen the remastered show in a good while, so my memory is foggy on the hanger deck berths. However, between my trusty copy of The "Making of Star Trek", and seeing TOS, I believe that the hanger deck had a landing pad elevator that allowed shuttles to be lowered and raised from the hanger bay below. In any case, this is a very "TOSesque" opening scene, and has the feel of the show. All that's missing is the music. Well done!

Many redshirts died that day...I'll be your huckleberry! Cry emote

Still, impressive image, so sad that even in the remastered series there was no way to work more shuttles into the show...

Beautiful work – love the close-ups of Jeffries' design; we usually see the (original) girl from a familiar angle. (One of the TOS-R eps has an extremely close flyby that I re-watch a few times every time we watch that ep).

I can see this as the opening scene to good episode. The first thing your see, the planet slowly rotating, then the Galileo swoops by followed by those two other shuttles, then the Enterprise rolls in with the rest of the shuttles. Kirk finishes his log entry and we see him, Spock and McCoy plus the occasional Red-shirt possy in the Galileo.

Nice shot, great work on the shuttles. (That's the Jefferies "if only we had a budget" shuttle concept, right?) You do have to wonder where they store them, and for that matter where they're going to find five shuttles' worth of replacement redshirts.

Yupp, it's the concept shuttle. The hangar is big... and full of redshirts :D

Yeah, it is, indeed. In the TOS-R optical shots, you can actually see the shuttle berths off to the sides. Nice work!

There's just a classiness about the old 1701 that can't be forgotten. Your art does a great job in capturing that.

Only way I can think of to improve this is to give the Enterprise the JJ.Kelvin textures instead. Awesome piece, always found it funny the captain, first officer, chief medical officer and sometimes the chief engineer would go down to the dangerous place with no way out.

Yupp. Classic Trek had ships in a plain, mono-toned colour, a few drops of rust here and there, markings, that's all. Like aircraft carriers. Roddenberry served on the USS Yorktown and based the Trek ships on naval concepts. He even wanted to name the ship Yorktown, but the real Enterprise stole the glory, so he stuck with Enterprise. Anyway, the Enterprise is mostly of a greyish colour, because WWII ships had the same colour.

its not the colour that is an issue, its the textures. Military ships were not built from a single block of metal carved away until only a ship remained. They were plated riveted and welded together.
