Description

Ever wondered how Captain Metlesits revieved his leg brace? Well, he had his own Fleet issue knife driven through his left knee by the Romulan filed primus Tomed. After Tomed fled, Metlesits had two options: return to Earth for reconstructive therapy or remain partially crippled but pursue his tormentor. Guess which option he chose...

Gritting his teeth against the pain that pounded from his left knee, Capt. Metlesits watched the viewscreen intently as the Polaris gained on the Romulan Bird of Prey, her weapons primed and ready.  For some reason Tomed hadn't cloaked, probably thinking that his wounded opponent wouldn't bother coming after him.  He also hadn't bothered to raise shields.
These would be his last mistakes.
Fighting a wave of nausea, which was followed by dizziness, Metlesits shifted in the captain's seat, feeling the blood trickle warmly down his leg.  He desperately wanted to lie down and close his eyes, but he couldn't afford to do that, at least not right now.
"Lock phasers on target," he hissed, part in pain, part in anger. "Full power."
"Phasers locked, sir," came the reply.
"Fire!"

Passing above the Romulan ship, the Polaris's phasers struck the bow of the other ship , blasting into the unprotected hull.  Hull plates buckled and burned as, at first, they resisted the destructive power being rained upon them.  Then, the metal running molten, the twin phaser beams won the uneven struggle.
The explosion was bright, a ball of orange and yellow that sent twisted metal plates tumbling.  Shuddering, the Romulan vessel started to nose dive, it's course changed by the energy unleashed upon it.
And still the barrage continued.
More explosions erupted, this time from the winged vessels underside, as the Polaris's weapons finished carving through the internal decks, disintergrating corridors, rooms, equipment, crew, and hit something vital.  The Bird of Prey's power flickered as emergency systems struggled to bypass damaged conduits.
Then, the phaser conduits starting to overheat, the Polaris stopped firing.

His vision starting grey at the edges, Metlesits smiled thinly as he watched Tomed's ship tumble away, a hole carved through her hull.  The ragged edges glowed yellow, and internal fires could be seen, fed by atmosphere leaking through internal breaches.
"Take that, you bastard!"
Then Metlesits allowed himself to pass out, the bridge falling into darkness.  He felt hands grab him and heard voices calling his name.  Then nothing but the blissful silence of unconsciousness.
