Continuing where we left off...

Why the Phase II Enterprise? Because it is a more modern design than the classic Connie. In the Abramsverse, the Enterprise is presented as brand new, the new flagship, whatever. In the novelization, it is written that the Enterprise is the culmination of all the data gathered by the Kelvin crew on the Narada. So here's my interpretation: the Enterprise already existed, but was called back from service a few years before this scene, and was thoroughly refitted, to the Phase II design. She was the testbed for the best tech Starfleet had, and thus the new flagship.

OMG! this IS Star Trek Phase II ! My ship's dedication placard would read- 'In all my travels, whether now or back then; tis' better to be something that never was, than not to be something which should have been.'

It's funny that you said the Enterprise already existed, especially since we find out in the Countdown into Darkness comics she was around, but she was retired when the new design came out.

Still. Just looking at the work of DAZ on the TOS.5 Enterprise shows all she really needed was a "new coat of paint" and the original Enterprise would have worked on the big screen.

Hell, just looking at the way she turned out in "Trials and Tribulations" shows that.

But I gotta hand it to ya, this is a beautiful shot, and i've always been very fond of the Phase 2 Enterprise. "We barely knew her."

I can understand why J.J.'s Enterprise was launched in 2258. A massive ship with formidable armaments attacks a Federation starship who were identified as Romulans would shift Starfleet's priority.

Now having to research new weapons, only to have politics shift when the ship hasn't been seen nor heard from in.... When they finally made up their mind on the Entetprise's design, and all of that could easily have lead to a decade long delay.

Like what if the Borg made their presence known before the Enterprise-D was built, and Starfleet decided to cancel the Galaxy class for the Sovereign and waited 10 years to get the new super ship built.

She's a beauty, I always liked the Phase II design.

Love the quote from the movie just before this scene.

Leonard 'Bones' McCoy: I may throw up on ya.
James T. Kirk: I think these things are pretty safe.
Leonard 'Bones' McCoy: Don't pander to me, kid. One tiny crack in the hull and our blood boils in thirteen seconds. Solar flare might crop up, cook us in our seats. And wait'll you're sitting pretty with a case of Andorian shingles, see if you're still so relaxed when your eyeballs are bleeding. Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence.
James T. Kirk: Well, I hate to break this to you, but Starfleet operates in space.
Leonard 'Bones' McCoy: Yeah. Well, I got nowhere else to go. The ex-wife took the whole damn planet in the divorce. All I got left is my bones.

That's not the scene before. That's several scenes before. :)

In fact in the scene just before the Enterprise is revealed it's kirk who echoes Bones' line "I may throw up on you."

Just sayin'!

That makes good sense I like it. Plus this design as well as the Motion Picture era ships will always be more appreciated than Abram's interpretation of the Constitution Class.

Much prefer this to the Abrams Connie. That one was way too...industrial-feeling. Huge turbines for nacelles, glass walls and panels everywhere, and lens flare out the ass.

The biggest problem with that is 9 out of 10 fan-made "reboot" Enterprises are actually better than the real product in the movie.

Yeah...sadly enough. I still liked the movie as a whole, but the ships design could have used a little more work. The Kelvin was alright, though.
