I revamped my Galaxy class model. The textures are 99% new or updated, I corrected the nacelle size, added some missing lifeboats on the underside of the saucer and I re-built the much criticized main deflector dish.

She will be part of my next model release spree...

I love the Galaxy Class, awesome ship and almost had a tear in my eye when Riker slammed it into a planet. Was anyone else miffed that an ancient Bird of Prey could kick the arse out of the Flagship?? Like what the hell??!! The Odyssey in DS9 didn't have shields and it held out for a while? Dead to rights the Enterprise had enough fire-power to vanquish those Duras Sisters and it didn't happen!!
I also love the Sovereign Class, something about baddass being streamlined and packing more punch just appealed to me. But the Galaxy will always hold a place in everyone's heart I suppose :)

Brannon and Braga wanted to kill off the D, they never liked it. Yeah, the same guys who did VOY and ENT... thank you, gentelen, thank you /sarcasm/

Voyager was awesome but they killed off the D too early... they should have let it get kicked but be refitted and then change its look for First Contact and make so badly damaged that they send it out with a bang and then introduce the Sovereign... fools!

Speaking of the deflector, I actually like the Generations version. I know most people don't, but I think that's because Trekkies tend to be geeks, and geeks tend to be anoraks. But I think the slimmer deflector really lends something to the design.

I don't like the Enterprise-E design, but I like that deflector design.

I was talking about the ST; Generations model of the Enterprise-D, which had a slimmer deflector than the model used during the series, and it received a lot of guff from the fans for that difference. Most 3D models of the Galaxy follow the fatter (taller, really) more almond-shaped deflector.

The Galaxy class always struck me like a big ol whale!
All bark but not enough bite! maybe later ones though.

I think the reason the Galaxy class doesn't come off as quite as tough is because the Enterprise-D always looked a little too cushy on the interior shots. Kind of like a starship hotel (included potted plants). And of course Gene Roddenberry made the mistake of putting children on board.

Exactly. It was like a cruise ship than an explorer/warship which was supposed to be its function. the familes aboard threw the dynamic off.

I think that's why they put phaser strips on the warp nacelles for DS9. That configuration (at least in my mind) suggests the ability to - in extreme situations - shunt warp output directly into the arrays. Now that would be a heck of a big bite!
