Franz Joseph's Enterprise by thefirstfleet Franz Joseph's Enterprise by thefirstfleet
A quick build I did in two days: the Enterprise, as depicted by Franz Joseph Schnaubelt's classic blueprints.

Imagine it, guys: the man had no internet, no graphics software, no tons of reference. All he had was screencaps and his imagination to fill in the blanks. His Enterprise is off on all too many levels, but still a classic, lovely interpretation.

Gorgeously done. I like the blue glow warp effect added to the inner nacelles. The original series may not have had it but it makes perfect sense to retrofit the effect given the more contemporary style of giving a blue glow fore warp engines. I think I'll paint my 1/1000 kit of the TOS E to have that effect.

Again, beautiful work.

I liked his blueprints mostly because the depicted the cruiser as a cruiser, and located the phaser banks.  My problem with the show was that because of the cost of filming different firing angles, you were left with the impression that the Enterprise only carried one set of phaser banks.  But the details on the blueprints were awesome.

Indeed. And they set the groundwork for all of us who made blueprints / MSDs thereafter.

Like :icondalekofborg: I don't remember the blue glow on the warp nacelles, but it looks really good (way better than the Abramsverse design for instance).

I wanted to give it that 70's vibe, during which the blueprints were created.

As I say it's a positive; in fact I'm considering the idea for my next Constitution class model.

It wouldn't have looked like plasma, but they actually WERE intended to glow originally.
I found this out because someone rediscovered some old pre-production memos from Desilu; they had to ditch the internal nacelle lighting rig because the 11-foot model already over budget and dangerously close to being behind schedule.

(The same two flaws that really permeated the entire Original Series: Time & Money, not enough of either; the fact that the show looks as good as does, and holds up as well as it does is a minor miracle, and a real testimony to the skill and dedication of everyone involved.)

Fantastic model as always BTW.

Off, yes, but I remember saving my money to buy that Star Fleet tech manual. I really liked the idea of the photon torpedoes coming from the second deck. He was probably influence a lot by AMT. By the way, I still have my 1986 edition.
